Speechlines

Speechlines draw the utterances in trials. Our approach draws timelines similar to multi-channel audio and video editing tools to present the speech recorded in approximately 20,000 Old Bailey trials. Empty speechlines are trials that contain no record of spoken words.

Drawing controls

  • The Session Date and Trial ID dropdown boxes (below) provide a simple example of an index to select a trial from the proceedings. Use the Ob Voices page to see speechlines used in the context of a catalogue or as an animation controller in the 3D puppet shows of trials e.g.
  • The 'many timelines' draws approximately one thousand timelines. This normally takes a while to complete!
  • A version for multiple projectors used to cover our lab walls with data can be found here Speechlines 2. It uses an interactive version of the visualisation and provides access to ~20,000 trial accounts that include markup of spoken words (created by the Old Bailey Corpus Project).
